چکیده
Gastrorenal shunts may induce hyperammonemia. Portosystemic shunts should be suspected when hyperammonemia occurs in patients with chronic kidney disease.

Portal-systemic encephalopathy after Fontan-type operation in patient with polysplenia syndrome.
An 18-year-old patient, who had polysplenia and single ventricle, presented with altered mental status 9 years after a Fontan-type operation and pacemaker implantation. He underwent replacement of common atrioventricular valve and aortic valve plasty 1 year previously and has been placed on multiple medications including beta-blocker for his poor ventricular function. Blood chemistry revealed h...
متن کاملChronic Portal-Systemic Shunt Encephalopathy in a Hemodialysis Patient Treated with Balloon-Occluded Retrograde Transvenous Obliteration
We report a case of chronic portal-systemic shunt encephalopathy in a 79-year-old female hemodialysis patient with end-stage renal disease. Approximately 1 month before admission, she occasionally had a discrepant conversation. It was considered that hepatic encephalopathy was caused by an increase in the ammonia level in the blood flow of the shunt, which had been diagnosed 7 years previously ...
متن کاملBalloon-Occluded Retrograde Transvenous Obliteration for Gastric Variceal Bleeding: Its Feasibility Compared with Transjugular Intrahepatic Portosystemic Shunt
OBJECTIVE To assess the feasibility of balloon-occluded retrograde transvenous obliteration (BRTO) in active gastric variceal bleeding, and to compare the findings with those of transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt (TIPS). MATERIALS AND METHDOS: Twenty-one patients with active gastric variceal bleeding due to liver cirrhosis were referred for radiological intervention. In 15 patients, ...
متن کاملRecurrent Hyperammonemia After Abernethy Malformation Type 2 Closure: a Case Report.
The Abernethy malformation is a rare congenital malformation defined by the presence of an extrahepatic portosystemic shunt. Although most patients are asymptomatic, clinical encephalopathy is present in 15% of cases. We present a patient with type 2 Abernethy malformation, hyperammonemia, and encephalopathy. Shunt closure was performed successfully using interventional angiography; however, hy...
متن کاملAn unusual cause of dysphagia after gastric variceal bleeding.
A 54-year-old male diagnosed with alcoholic cirrhosis had multiple episodes of upper gastrointestinal bleeding. He had a previous episode of hepatic encephalopathy. Baseline hepatic venous pressure gradient was 10 mmHg, and model for end-stage liver disease (MELD) score was 18. Gastroscopy revealed small low-risk esophageal varices (Figure 1a) and an active spurt from gastroesophageal varices t...
